This past summer, the Australian town of Kwinana installed a new filtration system at the Henley Reserve. This is an incredibly simple and very helpful. The advantages of using it have already been seen by both the state and the people, and they are as happy as possible.
One Million Ideas loves innovations, especially innovations that are environmentally friendly, and we would like to tell you all about this brand new amazing invention.
It consists of a net that is placed on the outlet of a drainage pipe which aim to catch large debris and protect the environment from contamination.
Such pipes pump drain water from residential areas to natural areas and can be disruptive and harmful to the environment from these locations. In turn, heavy rains usually wash this trash away, dragging it all down to the drainage systems.
The city authorities began by installing 2 nets and were surprised at the results — their new filtration system tend to catch more than 800 pounds of garbage within several weeks.
Installing these waste “traps” throughout the city and reducing damage to the ecosystem and natural environment has been determined. Although the construction and manufacture of these networks cost money (around $10,000 each), the overall system is still quite lucrative as they provide significant future cost savings. For example, they are now saving on labor costs that they previously had to pay for people who would collect all the litter manually.
When the nets get full, they are then lifted and the trash is placed into special garbage collecting trucks and transported to a trash-sorting center. All of this is separated into non-recyclable and recyclable material, which then goes on to further processing.
Then the nets are put back on the drainage outlets and start to do their work.
The new filtration system once again shows that small things matter and that concentrating on them can have a major and beneficial impact on the environment and humanity in general.
