Slay Your Way Down The Street With These 36 Beautiful Ghana Attires

by Ruby

For centuries, fashion has been regarded as a form of expression. It represents the culture and traditions of a specific country or region over time. It also represents various forms of art as well as the region’s unique materials. In Ghana, each ethnic group, each with their own culture, expresses themselves uniquely through their clothing.

Ghanian Fashion History

Ghanaian fashion has its origins in pre-colonial times. Traditional wooden looms for cotton, raffia (traditional palm tree fiber), and wool have existed since then. They are still regarded as an important aspect of their fashion. Most traditional ethnic clothes in Ghana are made from Kente, Kete, or Gonja cloth.

Kente, which is from the Ashanti region, is well-known not only in Ghana but also in other Western African countries. Kete is from Ewe, and Gonja is from Ghana’s northern region. These fabrics are commonly used to make Ghanaian national clothing.

Kete is related to Kente. It is also well-known for its vibrant colors and symmetrical pattern. Although their origins are unknown, both textiles are extremely valuable to Ghana’s cultural heritage.

Kente is a fabric that can be worn by both men and women. However, men and women wear it differently. It’s worn by men like an ancient Greek toga, across one shoulder and around the body. Women dress in a two-piece kente: one is used to make a wrap-around skirt (2 yards long and 45 inches wide) and the other as a shawl. To complete the look, a plain-colored blouse is worn. It is also a traditional Ghanaian ethnic wedding outfit.

  • Purple: Earth, healing.
  • Blue: sky, harmony, peace, good fortune, love.

  • Silver: moon, purity and serenity.

Isn’t it amazing how a textile piece can become an important part of life and have value? Kente is known for its large, bold square check pattern that is entirely handwoven.

Do you have any ideas? Kente is a nearly 400-year-old textile. It was woven from raffia palm fibers at the time, and the tissue structure resembled a basket.
