36 Bubble Braids To Rock Your Wild Night With The Girls

by Ruby

Let me introduce you to the flawless bubble braid if you adore the way braids appear but feel you lack the necessary braiding skills. These simple plaits are made up of fluffed-out sections of hair divided by hair ties. This pigtail, unlike others, is a professional-level hairdo that anyone can achieve. Why? The name is a little misleading on its own.

What Exactly Are Bubble Braids?

According to Miko Branch, hairstylist and CEO of Miss Jessie’s, “bubble braids are essentially a modern and playful update to standard ponytails, so it’s way easier to achieve than a traditional braid,” she added “This look typically consists of a high ponytail with strategically placed elastics tied throughout, which encourages hair to puff out and appear like a bubble.” Basically, you can make a bubble braid if you can do a ponytail.

The super playful look has been dominating this year’s awards season, from Doja Cat at the Grammys to Priyanka Chopra Jonas at the BAFTAs. It isn’t just showing up everywhere on Instagram. This hairstyle gives the impression that you spent much more time on your hair than you actually did, and it’s a great trick for hiding second-day (or third-day, no judgment) roots that are a little dubious.

“Bubble braids are great not only because they work for most hair types, but they can also be styled in different ways,” says Branch. “Some of my favorite bubble braid styles are pigtails, which can either sit at the side of or toward the back of the head, or as a single bubble braid in the back with hair pulled through over and under, which adds some fun dimension.”

Extra advantage? Similar to conventional braids, bubble braids are excellent for the next day’s heatless curls. Branch advises prepping hair with a leave-in conditioner beforehand because elastics can put strain and tension on the hair (which contributes to breakage). “Once hair is damp, apply a styling gel or styling lotion to tame frizz and promote hold while the style is secured. After leaving them in for a few hours, you should be left with beautiful heatless curls.”

How To Achieve Bubble Braids?

  1. To create a uniform, frizz-free base ideal for styling, first prepare your hair with a styling cream. This flexible formula makes it simpler to tease out additional volume as a finishing touch and helps to hold the look.
  2. Your hair should be pulled back into a ponytail at the height you choose. The tallest point should be as near the scalp as possible.
  3. Wrap another elastic hair tie a few inches down your ponytail. The length of the hair greatly affects the positioning of the elastic, and the easiest approach to guaranteeing a wonderful result is to maintain an equal spacing between each bubble.
  4. Once all of the elastics are in place, tease and pull at each part with your fingers. This generates many “bubbles” and loosens the hair between elastics, giving you the opportunity to customize your look based on how voluminous or teased you want them to be. Optional: Extend some ethereal tendrils around your face to give it some depth.
  5. Finish with a lightweight hairspray to tame flyaways and create extra staying power.
