Here’re Full Guide on Making A Retro Robot Dresser Makeover

by Sasha Ridley

This robot-inspired dresser makeover is the perfect mix of creativity and clever design. Using found hardware, mixed knobs, blocks, and metallic paint, you can transform an ordinary cabinet into a sculptural work of art.

It’s proof that functional furniture can double as playful décor. Each drawer has been customized with unique textures and details, creating an eclectic yet cohesive machine aesthetic.

Bonus, the top box, complete with its lever, is the bold finishing touch. This design encourages you to think outside the box and see every dresser as an opportunity to showcase personality while keeping practicality intact.

Materials Needed

  • 1 tall wooden dresser, approx. 40-50″ with 4-6 drawers
  • 1 small wooden box (12″ × 8″)
  • 10-12 assorted drawer knobs mixed sizes and styles)
  • 2 large round knobs
  • 1 drawer pull
  • 1 wooden dowel (6-8″ long, 1″ thick) and 1 small ball knob (for antenna/lever)
  • 1-2 wood blocks (approx. 3″ each) for “arms”
  • Metallic spray paint (silver or pewter, 12 oz)
  • Chalk paint in accent colors (red, blue, yellow, black, 8 oz each)
  • Strong adhesive (wood glue or E6000, 4 oz)
  • Screws and screwdriver
  • Sandpaper (120- and 220-grit)
  • Clear topcoat (spray, 12 oz)

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Begin by removing all hardware from the dresser. Then lightly sand the entire piece with 120-grit to remove any varnish or gloss. Smooth out with 220-grit before wiping clean.

Step 2: Spray the dresser base and the head box with metallic silver paint. You can apply 2-3 thin coats, drying in between, for a sleek retro finish.

Step 3: Attach the wooden box to the top of the dresser using strong adhesive and screws. This forms your robot’s head.

Step 4: Install two large round knobs on the front of the head as eyes. Place a single drawer pull horizontally beneath to act as the mouth. If you’d like to exaggerate the robot look, use washers or decorative backplates behind the knobs.

Step 5: Create an antenna by gluing the ball knob to the dowel, then attaching it upright to the top of the head box. For sturdiness, drill a small pilot hole first before gluing.

Step 6: Use wood blocks as arms, attaching them to the dresser sides with glue and screws. Paint them in metallic or contrasting colors for effect.

Step 7: Customize each drawer front to look like robot panels. Mix painted geometric designs with different drawer knobs for a button and dial effect. Also, use chalk paint in bold colors like red, yellow, and black for accents.

Step 8: Once all details are in place, seal the entire dresser with a clear spray topcoat. This not only protects your paintwork but also adds a finished sheen.

Step 9: Reattach all drawers and step back. Your robot dresser is now complete with part furniture, part futuristic sculpture!

Notes: You can mix modern knobs with vintage or reclaimed ones for a quirky, authentic look. And if it’s for a child’s room, consider adding glow-in-the-dark paint on small accents.
