Here’s Way to Turn Laundry into Art with Painted Post Clothesline

by Sasha Ridley

Nothing better than stepping into your backyard and seeing not just clothes drying, but a row of pastel garden sentinels holding them aloft.

These posts, dressed in color and detail, look like they belong in a fairy tale cottage.

With blooms at their base and linens swaying above, laundry day becomes less about the task and more about a rhythm like hanging wishes in the wind. It’s functional art that brightens even the simplest routines.

Materials Needed

  • 2-4 decorative wooden posts (6-8 ft tall, 4”×4” thickness, carved or plain)
  • Outdoor paint (choose 2-3 cheerful shades like coral, yellow, or mint)
  • Concrete mix (1 bag per post)
  • 50-75 ft of strong outdoor clothesline rope
  • 4 heavy-duty eye hooks (4” long, galvanized)
  • Paintbrush set (1 large, 1 detail brush)
  • Garden flowers or ground cover plants for base (optional)
  • Level and measuring tape

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Choose a sunny strip in your yard, leaving at least 20-30 ft of space between posts for hanging laundry. Mark the placement clearly.

Step 2: Dig two post holes at least 24” deep. Mix and pour concrete into each hole, setting your posts upright. You can use a level to make sure they’re perfectly straight. Let cure overnight.

Step 3: Once posts are solid, paint them in your chosen colors. Then use bold strokes for the main body and smaller brushes for detailing or carved sections. Let dry fully.

Step 4: Screw in the eye hooks near the top of each post. Thread your clothesline rope through, pulling it taut before securing tightly.

Step 5: To finish the look, plant flowers or low greenery around the base of each post. This not only hides the concrete base but ties your posts into the garden beautifully.

Tips:

I found that spacing the posts about 25 ft apart gave me the perfect balance between space and support.

If you want more strength, double up the rope so you can hang two rows of laundry at once. And don’t be afraid to pick bold colors, the brighter the posts, the more they turn laundry into a cheerful garden ritual.
