How To Make A Hankie Wreath

by Carolyn Mullet

Creating a hankie wreath is a fun and simple craft that anyone can do. With just a few handkerchiefs, an embroidery hoop, and some ribbon, you can make a beautiful decoration for your home. In this article, we’ll walk you through each step, so you can easily create your own unique wreath.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crafter, this project is easy to follow and perfect for adding a personal touch to your space. Let’s get started!

Materials You Need:

  • 1 6″ embroidery hoop
  • 15 coordinating ladies handkerchiefs
  • 15 small rubber bands
  • 5/8″ ribbon (approximately 4 feet long)

Instructions:

Step 1: First, separate the embroidery hoop into two pieces. Use the side without the metal bracket. Save the other side for another project.

Step 2: Fold a handkerchief into fourths. Make sure the center of the handkerchief is at the top right. (Optional: Starch and iron your handkerchiefs before folding them. Stiffer handkerchiefs hang better.)

Step 3: Fold the top left corner of the handkerchief diagonally down to the center. Then, fold the bottom right corner up to the center. The sides will overlap a bit.

Step 4: Lay the hoop on top of the handkerchief about one-third down from the point. Fold the point over and around the hoop. Secure it with a small rubber band. You might need to loop the band a few times.

Step 5: Repeat steps 2 to 4 with the next handkerchief. Continue doing this with all your handkerchiefs. You can use different handkerchiefs if you like.

Step 6: Once all the handkerchiefs are attached, flip the wreath over. Take a ribbon and tie it around one of the handkerchiefs, leaving about a foot of ribbon tail. Wind the ribbon around and between each handkerchief.

Step 7: When you finish winding the ribbon, tie it off where you started and make a bow. Trim the ribbon tails to your desired length. Your spring handkerchief wreath is now complete!

Tips and Notes:

1. Choose a Variety of Hankies: Use different colors and patterns to make your wreath more interesting. Mixing fabrics like cotton and satin can also add texture.

2. Iron Your Hankies: Ironing your hankies before folding them helps them stay neat and makes it easier to work with them.

3. Use Starch for a Stiffer Look: If you want your hankies to hold their shape better, consider using fabric starch before folding.

Note: If you find it challenging to keep the hankies in place while securing them, try using small pins or clips to hold them temporarily until you can wrap them with rubber bands.
