Step-by-step Guide on Making A French-Inspired Floral Dresser Makeover

by Sasha Ridley

A French-inspired dresser makeover like this shows how versatile decoupage and paint can be. Neutral chalk paints create a calming base, while stencils and floral images add texture and visual interest.

It’s an accessible DIY that balances beauty with practicality, transforming a small dresser into a statement piece without requiring advanced skills.

The project works well for older furniture with flat drawer fronts, since the smooth surface makes decoupage easier. A protective sealer ensures durability, so the romantic design lasts for years.

Materials Needed

  • 1 small dresser, approx. 28-34″ tall with 3-4 drawers
  • 120-grit sandpaper (1 sheet) and 220-grit (1 sheet)
  • Primer (8 oz, white or gray)
  • Chalk paints: soft gray, muted lavender, cream white (8 oz each)
  • Floral decoupage paper or napkins (1-2 sheets, A3 size)
  • Stencil (floral or border design, 6-8″)
  • Stencil brush or sponge (1–2″)
  • Painter’s tape (1 roll, 1″)
  • 1 bottle decoupage glue (e.g., Mod Podge, 8 oz)
  • 1 small detail brush (size 1–2) + 1 flat brush (2″)
  • Clear matte or satin sealer (8-12 oz spray or brush-on)
  • Optional: 3-4 replacement drawer knobs in vintage style

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Remove all hardware and sand the entire piece with 120-grit to strip any varnish. Then smooth with 220-grit, then wipe with a damp cloth.

Step 2: Prime the dresser with a thin coat, letting it dry fully. This ensures even coverage for lighter chalk paints.

Step 3: Paint the dresser body in gray or lavender, and the base/trim in cream white. You can use two thin coats, drying between layers.

Step 4: For the side panel, apply a layer of decoupage glue, place the floral paper, and smooth gently with a cloth to remove bubbles. Seal with another layer of glue on top.

Step 5: On the drawers, use painter’s tape to section off stripes or borders. Apply stencils with a stencil brush, dabbing lightly to avoid smudging.

Step 6: Once everything is dry, apply a clear matte or satin sealer across the entire dresser to protect the paint and paper.

Step 7: Reattach the knobs or replace them with vintage-style ones for added French charm.

Step 8: Style your dresser with soft décor like candles, flowers, or antique frames to highlight its Parisian-inspired beauty.
