Bring Vintage Charm to Your Garden with a Ladder Rack

by Sasha Ridley

There’s something comforting about a ladder leaned against an old brick wall. It recalls a time when chores were done slowly, under the sun, with the smell of flowers close by.

This rack captures that mood, practical yet poetic. Each rung becomes a space to drape fabric, turning ordinary laundry into part of the scenery, like banners fluttering in the breeze of a summer afternoon.

Materials Needed

  • 2 wooden side frames cut to 5-6 ft tall (sturdy hardwood works best)
  • 6-8 horizontal dowels or poles (each 3-4 ft wide, 1-1.5″ thick)
  • Exterior-grade screws or wooden dowel joints
  • Weatherproof wood stain or paint for durability
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
  • Optional: protective clear sealant

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Build the A-frame sides by cutting two identical ladder shapes. Each should have evenly spaced holes or brackets to hold your drying rods.

Step 2: Insert dowels across the frame to create your rungs. Secure them tightly with screws or dowel joints to handle the weight of wet laundry.

Step 3: Sand the surface smooth and apply a stain or paint to give it a weathered, rustic look. This not only enhances charm but also protects against moisture.

Step 4: Position the rack near a sunny wall or in the garden. For extra stability, you can secure the base into the ground with brackets or place rubber stoppers at the legs.

Step 5: Test with lightweight items first, then use it for larger towels or sheets. Over time, the wood will age beautifully, blending even more into your outdoor space.

Tips:

I found that spacing the rungs about 10 inches apart gives enough airflow for faster drying. If you want added flexibility, make the frame foldable so you can tuck it away when not in use.
