Nothing is better than yourself living in a cozy townhouse with just a narrow patio. Instead of giving up on line-drying, you can turn that space into a functional laundry zone.
Clothes flutter overhead while below you can still enjoy your bistro set, plants, or potted flowers. It’s practical living meeting everyday beauty.
Materials Needed
- 2 sturdy wall brackets (mounted on opposite walls)
- 5-7 lengths of nylon or cotton clothesline, each about 10-12 ft long
- Plastic or wooden spacers
- Wall anchors and screws
- Drill and level
- Optional: retractable clothesline kit
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Measure the distance between two opposing walls or posts to determine your line lengths. Aim for a height of 6-7 ft so clothes don’t brush the ground.
Step 2: Install wall brackets securely using wall anchors and screws. Double-check they’re level to avoid sagging lines.
Step 3: Thread the clothesline through each bracket, pulling tightly to ensure the lines stay taut. Then add spacers to keep the ropes evenly separated.
Step 4: Knot and secure each end, testing with a few damp towels to make sure it can bear weight.
Step 5: If using a retractable system, install the reel box on one wall and hooks on the opposite side so the lines can roll away when not needed.
Tips:
This setup works wonderfully in side alleys, patios, or even balconies.
If you love gardening, let vines climb along the walls nearby, the greenery makes the drying area feel less like laundry space and more like part of your living garden.
