How to Make a Woven Basket Bird Feeder for Your Garden

by Shelly

Watching birds flock to your garden is one of the most calming and rewarding experiences. A simple, handcrafted bird feeder not only provides food but also adds a rustic charm to your outdoor space. With a few natural materials and some patience, you can create a beautiful feeder that attracts a variety of garden birds.

Materials Needed

  • Flexible willow or rattan strips for weaving
  • A sturdy wooden stick or bamboo pole (approx. 3–4 feet)
  • Strong garden twine or wire
  • A shallow bowl or additional woven strips for the base
  • Birdseed of your choice
  • Scissors or garden shears
  • Waterproof wood glue (optional for extra stability)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1:

Prepare your weaving strips by soaking willow or rattan in water for 30–60 minutes. This makes them flexible and easier to manipulate without breaking.

Step 2:

Choose a sturdy wooden stick or bamboo pole as the main support. This will hold the feeder upright in your garden.

Step 3:

Create the base of your basket. You can use a shallow bowl or weave a circular base with your soaked strips, ensuring it’s firm enough to hold seeds.

Step 4:

Begin weaving the basket walls around the base. Use an over-under technique, adjusting the strips as needed to maintain an even shape. Make the walls about 6–8 inches high.

Step 5:

Secure the bottom of the basket to the pole with garden twine or wire. Wrap tightly to prevent wobbling, making sure the feeder remains balanced.

Step 6:

Finish the top edge of the basket by folding or twisting the strips neatly. Add extra twine or a small loop if you want to hang it instead of mounting on a pole.

Step 7:

Fill the basket with birdseed. Choose a mix suitable for local birds in your area to attract the most variety.

Step 8:

Place your feeder in a safe, visible spot in your garden. Ideally, choose a location with some cover nearby so birds feel secure while feeding.

Your handmade woven bird feeder is now ready to welcome birds into your garden. Regularly refill the seeds and check the basket’s stability to ensure it remains safe and inviting for your feathered visitors.
