Instructions And Inspiration: 33 Stunning Coffin Nails For Ladies This Year

by Ruby

If you’re looking for something different the next time you get your nails done, consider coffin nails. They are the nail shape that is inspired by a coffin. You might think that’s morbid, but with its emerging popularity, you might want to get in on this trend as soon as possible.

Because they resemble ballet shoes when worn, these nails have also been dubbed “ballerina” nails. You might think this is a new trend, but coffin nails were extremely popular in the 1990s and have only recently resurfaced. If you want these nails, you are going to have to grow them really long. Stubby little coffins are not permitted. There are many ways in which you can create these nails and we have a ton of options for you. Check out our comprehensive guide to shaping coffin nails as well as these 33 inspiring ideas to try this year.

Clean Your Cuticles And Tips

Begin by grooming your nails before pulling out your nail file. “Prep your cuticles by pushing them back or trimming them,”  suggests. Before you begin, make sure to remove any previous polish and thoroughly wash your hands.

Make A Square Shape

“It’s best to start off with square nails,” Truong says. So file the top of your nail perfectly flat and make 90-degree angles on the edges. This is more of a pre-step that allows for easier creation of the coffin shape.

Make The Point

Once your square shape is finished on all 10 nails, it’s time to create the tapered edge. “File the sides of the nails to an angle, almost as if you were creating a point for both of the sides of the nails to meet in the middle,” Truong says. If you’re new to nail filing, start slowly and with one nail at a time. Once you’ve achieved the look you desire, go to the next nail and try to mimic the shape.

Sharpen Your Edges

“The final step is to file the edge of the nails straight across,” Truong says. “Some people prefer the corners of the free edge to be more shaped; others prefer it softer and a bit more rounded.” Traditionally, the edges are quite sharp, but if you prefer them rounded, go ahead! It’s your preference.

Now that you have acquired the popular shape of coffin nails, now is the time to check out our stunning designs!
