Imagine stepping into that narrow walkway beside your house, where sunlight filters in just enough to dry a load of laundry.
Instead of wasting the space, your fence becomes a partner in purpose, holding up a line where clothes sway gently in the breeze. Practicality, meet charm.
Materials Needed
- 2-3 wooden or metal posts, 6-7 ft tall
- Wood screws or concrete mix
- Strong clothesline rope, about 30-40 ft
- 8 eye hooks or screw hooks
- Drill and measuring tape
- Optional: weatherproof paint
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Position your posts directly across from the fence at intervals of 8-10 ft. Then dig small holes about 12-18 inches deep to secure them.
Step 2: Set posts in the holes using either concrete for a permanent hold or packed soil for a lighter-duty setup.
Step 3: Install screw hooks into both the fence and the posts at equal heights. Two to three rows give you plenty of drying space.
Step 4: Run your clothesline through the hooks, pulling it tight before tying off each end.
Step 5: Clip your laundry and enjoy the practical use of what was once wasted space.
Tips:
This works especially well in long, shaded side yards where you wouldn’t typically sit or garden. Keep the posts low-profile and paint them to blend with your fence for a clean, finished look.
