How to Make A Farmhouse Gradient Mini-Dresser Makeover

by Sasha Ridley

This makeover shows just how effective simple paint and stenciling can be. A tall, narrow dresser gets new life with three shades of chalk paint like charcoal, gray, and ivory, layered to create a rustic gradient.

Plus, the grape stencils add subtle decoration, while the brass handles give a modern farmhouse touch. It’s an easy project that combines style with practicality, turning an outdated piece into a chic storage solution.

Perfect for small spaces, this narrow dresser stands tall without taking up much room.

Materials Needed

  • 1 narrow wooden dresser, approx. 40″ tall with 4 drawers
  • 1 sheet 120-grit sandpaper & 1 sheet 220-grit sandpaper
  • 1 quart primer (water-based)
  • 150ml chalk paint in charcoal black
  • 150ml chalk paint in medium gray
  • 150ml chalk paint in ivory/white
  • 1 grapevine stencil (approx. 5″)
  • Painter’s tape
  • 1 round stencil brush or foam sponge
  • 4 brass cup handles (3″)
  • Screwdriver or drill
  • 1 can matte clear topcoat spray (12 oz) or 250ml finishing wax
  • Clean cloth
  • Optional: drop cloth, small artist brush

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Remove all drawer handles and place the dresser on a drop cloth. Then sand with 120-grit to remove old varnish, then smooth with 220-grit. Wipe dust away with a damp cloth.

Step 2: Apply a coat of primer to the dresser body and drawers. You allow at least 2 hours to dry fully.

Step 3: Paint the drawers in gradient shades: top drawer charcoal black, second drawer medium gray, third drawer ivory, and bottom drawer ivory with subtle gray dry-brushing. Apply two coats for even coverage.

Step 4: Paint the dresser frame in ivory. For a rustic look, lightly sand edges after the paint dries to reveal small distressed spots.

Step 5: Secure the grapevine stencil with painter’s tape. Dip the stencil brush lightly in gray or white paint and dab gently over the stencil. Avoid overloading paint to prevent bleeding. Remove stencil carefully.

Step 6: Attach the brass cup handles with screws using a drill or screwdriver.

Step 7: Seal the dresser with matte clear topcoat spray or finishing wax. Buff with a cloth for durability and a soft finish.

Tips: Remember that a wax finish gives a softer, antique look, while a spray sealer offers durability for everyday use.
