How to Add Old-World Charm with Decorative Clothesline Poles

by Sasha Ridley

Imagine a summer morning where your sheets billow softly between posts that could belong to a Victorian garden.

Also, these clothesline poles, adorned with scroll-like brackets, carry more than laundry, they carry a sense of timelessness.

Every time you hang a garment, it feels less like a chore and more like continuing an old tradition, one that honors simplicity, fresh air, and beauty in the everyday.

Materials Needed

  • 2 wooden posts (8 ft tall, 4”×4” thickness, pressure-treated)
  • Decorative wooden brackets or scroll cutouts (approx. 18”-24” wide)
  • Outdoor wood paint (white or color of choice, 1 quart)
  • Concrete mix (1 bag per post)
  • 8 galvanized eye bolts or hooks (4” long)
  • 50–75 ft outdoor clothesline cord
  • Paintbrush (2” wide) + small detail brush
  • Measuring tape, drill, and level

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Pick a sunny, breezy location in your yard with enough space between poles (20-25 ft works best). You mark your spots.

Step 2: Dig two holes about 24–30” deep. Place the posts in and fill with concrete, keeping them straight with a level. Thern allow to set overnight.

Step 3: Attach your decorative brackets near the top of each post. These not only add stability but also create the ornate look.

Step 4: Paint the posts and brackets with outdoor wood paint, making sure every edge is sealed against weather. Let dry thoroughly.

Step 5: Install galvanized eye bolts across the brackets. Then thread the clothesline cord through and pull it tight before knotting securely.

Step 6: Step back and admire—a clothesline that looks like a piece of garden architecture, ready to serve you season after season.

Tips:

I found that painting my posts in crisp white made the laundry itself look brighter in contrast, almost like a living postcard scene.

If you want to make yours even more enchanting, plant climbing flowers like morning glories or sweet peas nearby so they can twine around the posts over time.
