Guide on Making A Hand-Painted Floral Mini Dresser Makeover

by Sasha Ridley

This floral-painted mini dresser makeover shows how even the smallest furniture can make a statement. Using pastel chalk paints, simple stenciling, and hand-painted flowers, the project blends elegance with playfulness. It’s an ideal beginner-friendly DIY, since small surfaces let you practice brush techniques without feeling overwhelmed. The result is a sweet, functional storage piece that doubles as a decorative accent. Great for bedrooms, craft rooms, or as a handmade gift, it’s proof that practical storage can be beautiful, too.

Materials Needed

  • 1 mini dresser (wooden, approx. 12-18″ tall, 3-4 drawers)
  • 120-grit sandpaper (1 sheet)
  • Primer (optional, 8 oz)
  • Chalk paints: pastel pink, mint green, lavender, and white (4 oz each)
  • Detail paintbrushes (round tip sizes 1-3 and flat size 1/2″)
  • Floral stencil (optional, 6-8″)
  • Artist acrylics for flower details (pink, magenta, green, yellow)
  • 1 bottle clear matte sealer (8 oz)
  • Painter’s tape (1/2″)
  • Old drawer handles (reuse) or 3 vintage-style replacements
  • Drop cloth and lint-free cloths

Step-by-step Guide

Step 1: Remove drawer handles and set them aside. Sand the entire surface lightly with 120-grit to remove any glossy finish. Also, wipe away dust with a clean cloth.

Step 2: Apply primer if the wood is dark or varnished, then let it dry fully. This helps pastel colors appear brighter.

Step 3: Paint each drawer in a different base color like pastel pink, lavender, or mint green, allowing for playful variety. Then paint the dresser frame in a soft gray or light neutral for contrast. Let dry between coats (2-3 hours).

Step 4: Use painter’s tape to add stripes on one side panel. For polka dots, dip the end of a round brush handle into white paint and press gently onto the drawer front.

Step 5: For flowers, sketch light outlines with a pencil or stencil, then layer pink and magenta petals with a round brush. Add green leaves and soft yellow centers. Then blend while the paint is damp for a natural look.

Step 6: Once the paint is fully dry, seal with a matte sealer to protect your artwork from scratches. Now brush or spray evenly, and let it cure overnight.

Step 7: Reattach original drawer handles or replace them with vintage-style ones for an extra charming touch.

Step 8: Display your dresser proudly, it’s now a cheerful and functional piece that feels like bringing a bit of spring indoors.
