This Marvel dresser is the perfect way to repurpose both furniture and comic books into a functional showpiece. By combining painted surfaces with decoupage comic strips, it blends durability and personality. The bold navy blue acts as a clean backdrop, while the drawers highlight colorful Marvel art. Custom knobs—each one themed around a hero—pull the look together. A clear sealer ensures the paper stays vibrant and protected. Perfect for kids’ bedrooms, game rooms, or any fan’s collection corner.
Materials Needed
- 1 dresser, approx. 40-48″ tall with 3-5 drawers
- Sandpaper: 120-grit & 220-grit sheets
- Primer (1 quart, white)
- Navy blue chalk or latex paint (1 quart)
- Assorted old comic books or high-quality comic prints (laser-printed, A4 or letter size)
- Decoupage glue (e.g., Mod Podge, 8 oz)
- Foam brush (2″) and detail brush (½”)
- Scissors
- Custom drawer knobs (Captain America shield, Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man, etc.)
- Clear polyurethane or spray sealer (matte or gloss, 12 oz)
- Painter’s tape (optional)
Step-by-step Guide
Step 1: Remove the hardware and sand the dresser with 120-grit, then smooth with 220-grit. Then wipe down to remove dust.
Step 2: Prime the entire dresser with a thin, even coat. Let dry for 2 hours.
Step 3: Apply navy blue paint to the dresser body and drawer fronts (leave some drawers aside for comic art). You should use two coats for full coverage, letting each dry before re-coating.
Step 4: While paint dries, cut out your favorite comic panels. Next, arrange them on drawer sides or fronts before gluing, to ensure a balanced look.
Step 5: Apply a thin coat of decoupage glue to the surface. Lay the comic pieces flat, smoothing air bubbles with a soft cloth. Let dry 20-30 minutes.
Step 6: Brush a thin coat of glue over the comics to seal them. I recommend repeating with 2-3 layers, letting each dry fully.
Step 7: Once dry, spray or brush a clear topcoat across the dresser for durability.
Step 8: Replace knobs with themed superhero handles. Then reattach drawers, and your Marvel masterpiece is ready for action!
